Pep Guardiola has signed a two-year contract extension with Manchester City, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2027.
The decision comes after reports earlier this week suggested he had agreed to stay for one more year, with the option for1 another. However, Guardiola has opted for a straight two-year deal.
Guardiola, who has won 18 major trophies, including six Premier League titles and a Champions League, admitted that City’s recent four-game losing streak influenced his decision to extend his stay. He explained that he felt compelled to stay after the tough run, saying, “I felt I could not leave now, simple as that. Maybe the four defeats were the reason why. I felt the club still wanted me, and that’s why we signed.”
The manager expressed his deep connection to Manchester City, saying, “Manchester City means so much to me. This is my ninth season here; we have experienced so many amazing times together. I have a really special feeling for this football club.” Guardiola also thanked everyone at the club for their continued support, including the owner, chairman Khaldoon, director of football Txiki Begiristain, and the fans.
“I have everything a manager could ever wish for, and I appreciate that so much. Hopefully now we can add more trophies to the ones we have already won. That will be my focus,” he added.
While Guardiola’s leadership has been central to City’s success, he was quick to share the credit.
“People believe I am the reason for the success, but I’m part of the reason, not the only reason,” he said. “It’s a team effort. All managers know that success comes from incredible support from everyone, not just one individual.”
Guardiola emphasized that City’s success is due to a collective effort, including the contributions of the players, backroom staff, and key figures at the club. He also highlighted the impact of club owner Sheikh Mansour and the direction set by Ferran Soriano and the leadership team.
“I’m proud to be part of the success, but I’ve never felt that I am the only reason. The players, the staff, everyone who has been here contributes to putting the club where it is today,”
Guardiola said. He also pointed out that the success of the club depends on maintaining high standards, bringing in quality players, and keeping the right mentality.
As Guardiola enters his ninth season at Manchester City, he remains focused on the future, ensuring the team stays competitive and continues to win.
