Manchester United are reportedly considering a surprise move for Christopher Nkunku, the Chelsea forward who has expressed unhappiness over his limited minutes this season.
Nkunku’s Struggles at Chelsea
Nkunku, who joined Chelsea for £52 million in the summer, has found it difficult to secure regular first-team football. Despite his potential, the 26-year-old has been mostly used as a backup, with Nicolas Jackson preferred as the starting striker. Nkunku has started only one Premier League match this season and has played just 155 minutes of league action.
Impressive in Cup Competitions
However, Nkunku’s performances in cup competitions have been much more impressive. He is Chelsea’s top scorer across all competitions, with 10 goals, averaging a goal every 68.8 minutes. His ability to find the back of the net when given a chance has only highlighted his frustration with his lack of league opportunities.
Nkunku's Growing Discontent
According to reports from L’Equipe, Nkunku is growing increasingly unhappy with his sporadic involvement at Chelsea. As a result, Manchester United are said to be monitoring the situation closely and may offer Nkunku a way out of Stamford Bridge.
Manchester United’s Striking Woes
This move could come at a time when Manchester United are in need of reinforcements in attack. The club has struggled to score goals this season, netting just 12 goals in the Premier League, which is as many as newly-promoted Ipswich Town and fewer than Wolves, who sit in 19th place. With new manager Ruben Amorim set to officially start on Monday, improving the team’s attacking output will be a priority.
Enzo Maresca’s Comments on Nkunku
Enzo Maresca, who has worked with Nkunku at Chelsea, spoke out this week about the forward’s lack of playing time in the league. Maresca said he felt “shame” over the decision to limit Nkunku’s minutes and mentioned that the player had been one of Chelsea’s best performers during pre-season.
“Christo, every time he plays, he scores, and he does well,” Maresca said. “Also, he was probably our best player in pre-season, no doubt. He was playing as an attacking midfielder, but now we are using him as a nine, which we all know isn’t his position. He’s more of a second striker or someone who plays between the lines.”
A Stellar Record at RB Leipzig
Before joining Chelsea, Nkunku had a fantastic time at RB Leipzig, scoring 58 goals in his final two seasons at the club. In the 2022/23 season, he was the Bundesliga’s joint-top scorer before making his £52m move to Chelsea. Unfortunately, his debut season with the Blues was marred by injuries, and he only started twice in the Premier League last year.
What’s Next for Nkunku?
With Manchester United looking for a striker to improve their attacking options and Nkunku frustrated at Chelsea, it seems a move could be on the horizon. United’s interest may give the Frenchman the opportunity he’s been seeking, while also providing the Red Devils with a much-needed goal scorer.
