Italian coach Claudio Ranieri is set to return to Roma as their new head coach for the third time in his career.
Ranieri, who retired a few months ago after helping save Cagliari from relegation, will come out of retirement for one last challenge with Roma.
Roma's decision to bring Ranieri back is not yet officially confirmed but has already been reported in Italy. This move comes after talks with Vincenzo Montella, who coaches Turkey, did not work out.
Claudio Ranieri has a strong connection with Roma. He played for the club in the 1973-74 season and later managed the team twice: once from 2009 to 2011 and again at the end of the 2018-19 season. Ranieri has always had the respect of Roma fans, especially during tough times.
Ranieri traveled to London to meet with the club's owners, the Friedkin brothers, to finalize the deal on Wednesday. He will be in charge of Roma until the end of the season and is expected to take a position on the board afterward, according to Italian media reports.
The decision to hire Ranieri reflects the club's desire to calm the criticism from fans and bring in someone respected by both the fans and players. Roma has been struggling recently, and they hope Ranieri can help turn things around.
Ranieri will be Roma's third coach this season and the fourth coach so far in 2024. Earlier this year, the club sacked Portuguese coach José Mourinho in January, followed by Italian Daniele De Rossi in September, and Croatian Ivan Juric in November.

Ranieri will take over a team currently 12th in the Serie A standings with just 13 points, only four points ahead of the relegation zone. He will lead his first training session on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the players who are not on international duty. His first match in charge will be on Sunday, November 24th, against Napoli, the league leaders, at the Diego Armando Maradona stadium.
